WEST HAMPSTEAD LIBRARY

West Hampstead Library is a fantastic resource, with fully accessible sections for adults (upstairs) and children (downstairs). It receives nearly 90,000 visits per year – mostly local residents but also people who work in West Hampstead or who are passing through (including an increasing number of tourists).

Over the last few years, on average around 1,000 extra people have signed up for library membership every year.

In the year 2014-15 just over 35,000 books and other materials were issued from West Hampstead library. As can be seen, that is less than half the number of visitors, and helps to illustrate the fact that many people nowadays use libraries for the free wifi on offer, for printing, photocopying (colour and b&w) and for use of the computers. In fact during 2014-15 visitors booked nearly 11,000 sessions on the library terminals.

The library plays another vital role. Following the closure of Camden's Housing Office on West End Lane, the library is now the only place in West Hampstead where Camden Council staff have any face-to-face interaction with the public. In this respect it serves as a hugely important source of information and contact.

Visitors will find a wealth of information on local services, job training schemes, plus noticeboards galore carrying news of what's on in the area. FoWHL has its own noticeboard by the lift.

ON THE SHELVES

Of course the library's core purpose is to offer books for lending and reference, and also talking books, music on CD, films on DVD, plus newspapers and magazines.

You can search the online catalogue here.
West Hampstead Library is staffed by a lovely bunch of trained professionals and book lovers, always happy to help, advise and make the most of your visit.
